AU Avengers drabble/ficlet @ 06:31 pm

Probably comprehensible only to seanchai.

Stephanie never bothered with a secret identity these days. During the war, she had occasionally spent periods undercover as an ordinary WAC, and it had always been disastrous. She’d never been very good at taking orders, especially not from men who sneered at her uniform and called her “Miss” instead of “Private Rogers.”

Even then, no one had ever sneered at the costume.

Wasp and Giant-Girl didn’t hide their identities either—Hannah Pym’s Pym particles had gotten her nominated for a Nobel prize in chemistry, though she hadn’t won, and John Van Dyne never passed up a chance to put himself in the spotlight.

It had never even occurred to Stephanie that Valkyrie was ever anyone but, well, Valkyrie until the day John was injured in a fight and Valerie Blake appeared at the door of the Avenger’s mansion, clad in an EMT uniform, with a medical bag in one hand. Val walked with a limp—“Car accident”—and her thin, gawky frame was as different from Valkyrie’s statuesque curves as could be imagined, but she stood almost eye-to-eye with Stephanie’s six-foot height. Her eyes were the color of lighting, the air around her smelled like ozone, and Stephanie had never understood how anyone could look at this woman and not immediately see her for who and what she was.

The Iron Maiden’s identity was a closely kept secret, and her boss always answered inquiries from reporters with a flirtatious shrug and mysterious smile. “I’m afraid the Maiden’s name is privileged corporate information,” Tonya Stark would say, smiling up at Barbara Walters or Jonah Jameson through those incredible eyelashes. “A girl’s got to have some secrets, you know.”

Stephanie might not have a PhD in biochemistry or a Masters in engineering, but she’d been trained for covert ops work once upon a time, before the OSS had thrown up its collective hands and sent her Jamie Barnes to do the things Stephanie couldn’t. She knew what to look for. Speech patterns could be distinctive even through an electronic filter, and The Iron Maiden’s armor changed her body language less than one might expect. Someday, she might even work up the courage to tell Tonya that she knew.

Valkyrie is totally the best part of our genderswap AU of an unwritten AU. I'm fond of Thor, but I'd totally watch an entire television series or read an entire string of novels devoted to Val Blake.

Eee! I love the description of 'Valerie Blake'. Because of course no god - or valkyrie - would ever really be able to hide their power behind a mortal facase properly.

Val Blake is awesomeness incarnate. I want to read entire comic titles devoted to her, and have Valkyrie fanart, and a Valkyrie tv show, and probably about three movies, too.

Stephanie/Tonya emo porn would also be good.

Clearly, both need to exist. A Val Blake series would rock. She'd be an incredibly kickass heroine. And really hot.

Steph/Tonya emo-porn in the line of Hard Times would also rock.

Move over, Anita Blake. Valerie can kick your werewolf-and-vampire-banging ass. Without picking up her hammer.

I now kind of want to write a cross-over ficlet, where Val shows up to answer a vampire-related emergency call and pwns Anita's bitchy attitude with a single dismissive sentence. "Remove yourself from the crime scene, please. While you and the detective over there argue over whose balls are bigger, people over there are bleeding." *thinks* Verily, this woman, though powerful, is both arrogant and overly given to argument, like unto Namorra, Princess of the Atlanteans. The Daughter of Odin has no time for discussion with such a one.

*delurks* That is so cool!

(The Tonya bits gave me cognitive dissonance- in the genderswap AU I work up at long red lights, her name's Toni, and since the armor looks just the same Iron Man is still Iron Man to the public. Toni may or may not have repressed gender issues. Lots of repressed gender issues. I might like this better, though, just because 'Iron Maiden' is such an awesome name.)

Stephanie. Stephanie. I really kind of want to know what her costume and Bucky's look like, if they were designed in the forties. (I'll bet fighter pilots used to use her image as nose art.) Actually, I want Stephanie's entire AU history, and what she thinks of the modern world, and a whole lot of Tonya flirting with her at public events.

Thanks! seanchai and I spent a disgusting amount of time making this AU up, even though we're not going to seriously write it (you just flat couldn't get away with having some of the stuff that happens to Tony in canon happen to a girl).

Girl!Bucky's costumes is exactly the same (Jamie Barnes is sixteen, looks twelve, and can open a man's throat with a knife in the time it takes to draw a deep breath), and Stephanie is in essentially the same costume, but with low heels on the boots and a partial mask a la Jessica Drew instead of a cowl (so her long, blonde hair can blow dramatically in the wind).

Valkyrie dresses kind of like Xena, if Xena were six and a half feet tall and blonde.

a whole lot of Tonya flirting with her at public events.

They totally dance together at formal events, Tonya in slinky silk dresses with high necks and no back (because she can't show off any cleavage thanks to the cybernetic heart, but she's going to show off something), and Stephanie in a guy's tuxedo.

So now I'm trying to imagine that one storyline where Tony's armor fell in love with him, flew him to a deserted island, and ripped his clothes off, except replayed with Tonya.

Yup, that'd come across weird. (Weirder.)

That's exactly how I was picturing Steph's costume, exposed hair and all, and man, she'd look good in a tuxedo. The mental image of dinner-jacketed Steph and high-neckline short-skirt Tonya has totally made my day. (Actually, I think I like Tonya more than Tony now. Tony doesn't- well, Tony has never to my knowledge flirted with JJ Jameson, although he might well have incredible eyelashes under the right artist.)

Well if you want an image for a female captain America, you could always use a pic of American Dream. She's basicaly using Cap's costume.
